The food was deemed a bio-hazard as it was certified in Utah, but not Nevada (and also not certified by the USDA). Organizers were required to pour bleach on all of the food.

Ridiculous.

I have to say though… Mary Oaks may be ignorant and kind of a jerk. But she’s not the enemy here. T.P.ing her house won’t get anyone their rights back. The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the big corps that indirectly sign Mary Oaks’ checks are responsible.

danceswithfaeriesunderthemoon:

Columbus was a jerk and so are you

This post originated on Twitter — where Ricky Martin, of all people, linked to a ridiculous Huffington Post article denouncing the evils of bloody, barbaric Christopher Columbus and suggesting we celebrate a “Heroes of Peace Day” instead of Columbus Day. I take no issue with celebrating those who put forth an effort to make the world today a more peaceful place. Good job everyone!

However, if you’re going into the business of denouncing myths, it might be useful to mention that popular views of aborigines (or amerindians, or natives, or whatever you want to call them) as uniformly ignorant-but-kind victims are just as romanticized as those of the brave explorer who hauled himself across an ocean based on a prophetic theory, if not more.

Nobody’s going to deny a whole lot of people died and/or were enslaved during colonization. Similarly, one shouldn’t deny those same dudes where murdering, sacrificing, extorting and eating the crap out of each other long before the white man got to them — in ways far less civil than the outrageous exaggerations in the article linked above. We should also not deny the fact that whatever his methods or disregard for different races, Columbus took on an expedition that few others would have and changed the way entire civilizations saw the world and their place in it.

Judging people who lived 500+ years ago by the standards of our current society is a moronic move to begin with. The world in 1492 and human knowledge of it were both completely different from what they are now. Not bothering to learn that pre-Columbian America was no Eden, populated by people who were far from the peaceful, grass-tokin’ children of the land we’d love for them to have been, is a total douche move.

There are three sides to every story. This guy’s side, that guy’s side, and the truth. It’s easy to not question the sensationalist, openly one-sided stories, especially when they inspire these feelings of righteous indignation we humans can’t seem to get enough of (and have the remarkable talent of getting over in minutes). Man has been doing man wrong since the beginning of time. Singling out one (admittedly callous) dead Italian as if he was the root of all evil just perpetuates scapegoating — in war, in daily disputes, in economics, at the office, etc. No man is an island.

The Vegan's 100

This tumblog is all about trying new stuff, so I’ve decided to take on the Vegan’s 100 challenge, an offshoot of the Omnivore’s 100.

I’m pretty excited to try the vegan versions of a lot of these foods.

Everything here is either naturally free of animal products or can be veganized, and just like the original, these foods vary from the every day to extraordinary, delectable and disgusting. They’re simply all of the things that, in my opinion, any vegan foodie should definitely sink their teeth into at least once.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it:

1) Copy this list into your own blog, including these instructions.
2) Bold all the items you’ve eaten.
3) Cross out any items that you would never consider eating.
4) Post a comment on the original post once you’ve finished and link your post back to that one.
5) Pass it on!
